Using Private Medical Insurance

At East London’s Most Comprehensive Physiotherapy Clinic

Insurers we work with

LPAW works with all major UK private health insurers. If you have private health insurance, you may be able to use your policy to cover part or all of the cost of your physiotherapy, osteopathy, or other treatments at our Bow and Stratford East Village clinics.

The process is straightforward – but the specifics vary by insurer and policy. This page explains how it typically works and what you need to do to use your insurance with LPAW.

Step 1: Check Your Policy

Before booking, check what your policy covers. Most private health insurance policies cover outpatient physiotherapy, but coverage varies in several important ways:

  • Excess: Many policies have an annual excess — the amount you pay out of pocket before the insurer covers costs. Know your excess before attending.
  • Number of sessions: Some policies cap the number of physiotherapy sessions per year or per condition.
  • GP referral requirement: Some policies require you to obtain a GP referral before seeing a physiotherapist privately. Others allow direct access.
  • Pre-authorisation: Most insurers require you to obtain a pre-authorisation number before your first appointment. Without this, your insurer may not reimburse the cost.
  • Network providers: Some policies only cover treatment at approved (“network”) providers. Check whether LPAW is within your network if your policy has network restrictions.

The most reliable way to check is to call the member services number on the back of your insurance card before booking.

If your policy requires pre-authorisation (most Bupa, AXA, and Cigna policies do), call your insurer and request authorisation for outpatient physiotherapy at LPAW. You will typically need to provide:

  • Your policy number
  • The name and HCPC registration number of the treating practitioner (we can provide this)
  • A brief description of your condition or reason for attending
  • LPAW’s provider details (we can provide our registration numbers)

Your insurer will issue a pre-authorisation number. Keep this — you will need to provide it to us when you book or attend your first appointment.

Call us on 020 8983 3218 or email admin@lpawclinic.com. Let us know you are using insurance and provide:

  • Your insurer’s name
  • Your pre-authorisation number (if obtained)
  • Your policy/membership number

We will confirm our registration with your insurer and set up your account accordingly.

Bring your insurance card (if you have one) and pre-authorisation details to your first appointment. Depending on your insurer’s billing arrangement, LPAW may bill the insurer directly, or you may pay at the appointment and claim reimbursement — we will advise you on this when you book.

Meet our team of experts

LPAW’s clinical team includes 19 practitioners, many holding postgraduate qualifications from UCL, King’s College London, and Guy’s and St Thomas’. Lead clinician Mr Arjun Viswanath MSc, MCSP, MPPA – Co-Founder and Consultant Physiotherapist – brings 25+ years of NHS and private experience including BMI London Independent Hospital and Harley Street.

Every clinician joining LPAW completes a mandatory intensive shadowing placement with our Consultant Physiotherapist before seeing patients independently. This is not a standard practice at most clinics – it’s our way of maintaining clinical consistency across the team.

Covered & Not Covered

Covered

Most physiotherapy and osteopathy treatments at LPAW are coverable under standard private health insurance outpatient benefits. This typically includes:

  • Initial assessments
  • Follow-up physiotherapy sessions
  • Osteopathy sessions
  • Dry needling and manual therapy (as part of physiotherapy appointments)
  • Shockwave therapy (RSWT) — check with your insurer; some policies cover this as part of physiotherapy, others require separate authorisation

Not Covered

What is typically not covered under standard outpatient physiotherapy:

  • Sports massage as a standalone service (not part of a physiotherapy treatment plan)
  • Self-use pool memberships
  • Med-X gym memberships
  • Some specialist assessments – check with your insurer

If you are unsure whether a specific treatment is covered, call your insurer with the specific treatment name before attending.

What Our Patients Say

From the moment I walked into this clinic, I knew everything was going to be okay. After seeing many physios, Priyanka, the pelvic specialist, was the first one to properly diagnose my back injury and choose exercises that were actually right for my condition.

I HIGHLY recommend hydrotherapy. This clinic has truly been life-changing for me. When you live with constant pain, finding real relief is priceless.

Thank you for the care, professionalism, and for giving me hope again ❤️

We had 6 of their amazing physiotherapist support London’s Air Ambulance Charity’s post-race reception for the 2026 London Marathon. Their communication before and during the event was excellent and all our runners have commented on how much their post-race massage has helped them with their recovery. We hope to work with them again in the future

I suffer with lower back disc bulges pinching my muscles and severely limiting my mobility, stability, and indeed causing agonising pain at the worst of times. I received a kind, patient and conscientious home visit at first before being invited to hydrotherapy at the clinic. 2 sessions in and I'm loving it so much, I'm determined to get one of these pools for myself later on in life. Couldn't recommend them highly enough.

I had to visit the clinic for a hip injury I received from running. I started physio with Anup back in November and started with hydrotherapy, moving into physio in the new year. I've had a great experience with Anup and now I'm well on the road to recovery, I've started running again and I know what strength workouts I should be doing to keep up my recovery. So glad I found Anup and the clinic and would recommend them to anyone who has an injury!

I was assisted by Priyanka while recovering from a torn quad, and I couldn’t have asked for a better physiotherapist. She was incredibly supportive during a moment of real vulnerability, and I always felt truly taken care of. Her focus during every session was exceptional she even kept counting my reps to make sure I stayed on track!

Priyanka is a wonderful asset to the team, and I feel very lucky to have had her during my recovery. Highly recommended.

Best Physio ever. I visited the clinic after I damaged the ACL ligament practicing judo. I was unable to walk, using crutches and couldn't bend the leg. I was initially told by the doctor to wait at least 6/7 months to be fully recovered and the physiotherapy was the only way to get better. Thanks to the skilled clinic and very professional physiotherapist, they managed to get me back on trainings after 3/4 months only having now a stronger knee than before. I was assisted my Mohammed N R and his job was beyond the expectations. They have specific equipment to practice a high variety of exercises and furthermore they are super friendly and easy reachable by email or phone for last minute doubts. I cannot thank more for the assistance received for a faster recovery they granted me. I fully recommend them.

Frequently Asked Questions

This depends on the insurer and the arrangement we have with them. With many major insurers (Bupa, AXA, Cigna), we can bill directly. With others, you may pay at the appointment and submit a claim to your insurer for reimbursement. We will clarify this at the time of booking.

You will need to obtain the GP referral before your Bupa pre-authorisation will be granted. Contact your GP for a referral letter, then call Bupa with the letter to obtain pre-authorisation. We cannot bill Bupa without a valid pre-authorisation number.

If your policy has an excess, you will be responsible for paying the excess amount. Whether this is collected by LPAW or directly by your insurer depends on the billing arrangement. We will clarify this when you contact us about your insurance.

Shockwave therapy (RSWT) is covered by some insurers under physiotherapy treatment plans, and not by others. Vitality and AXA typically cover shockwave when it is clinically indicated within a physiotherapy plan. Bupa coverage for shockwave varies by policy. Call your insurer and ask specifically about shockwave therapy (also referred to as ESWT or RSWT) before attending.

If you exhaust your pre-authorised sessions, you can continue as a self-pay patient at our standard rates. We can also help you request additional sessions from your insurer if clinically justified — your physiotherapist can provide a clinical summary to support this request.

Most policies that cover physiotherapy cover paediatric physiotherapy for children named on the policy. Check your policy’s dependant coverage terms and follow the same pre-authorisation process. Contact us if you need help navigating this.

If your physiotherapist recommends imaging or a specialist opinion, we’ll refer you to a consultant from our network. The consultant’s admin team will contact you to arrange an initial appointment and confirm what your insurer needs from them – most insurers require a consultant-led referral for an MRI or ultrasound rather than accepting one directly from a physiotherapist. In most cases, a consultant will need to assess you in person before requesting imaging. Once scanned, results are typically available within a few days, and your consultant will share them with us so your rehabilitation can continue without delay.
