Types of Massage

Sports Massage

Sports massage uses firm, targeted techniques to relieve muscular tension caused by training, physical activity, or demanding lifestyles. It is suitable for athletes, gym-goers, and anyone experiencing tightness from work or daily activity. Treatment may include deep tissue work, trigger point therapy, and mobility techniques to reduce tension, improve circulation, support recovery, and enhance movement. Sports massage is effective for both pre- and post-event recovery, as well as ongoing muscular maintenance. If you are experiencing pain or a specific injury, we recommend starting with a physiotherapy assessment to ensure the most appropriate treatment is provided.

Swedish Massage

Swedish massage uses lighter, flowing techniques to promote relaxation, reduce stress, and improve circulation. It is ideal for general muscular tension, stress-related tightness, fatigue, poor sleep, or recovery after illness or inactivity. Compared to deeper treatments, Swedish massage offers a gentler approach while still helping the body relax and recover. At LPAW, Swedish massage is delivered as a professional clinical treatment focused on improving both physical and mental wellbeing.

Therapeutic / Deep Tissue Massage

Therapeutic or deep tissue massage focuses on the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue to release long-standing tension and improve movement. It is particularly beneficial for chronic tightness, postural tension, and recovery during the later stages of soft tissue injury. The treatment uses slow, focused pressure to restore muscle function and reduce restriction. Deep tissue massage is not about excessive force, but about applying the right pressure effectively and safely for each individual.

Lyric Busk, Sports Massage Specialist

Lyric holds an ITEC Level 3 Diploma in Massage (Distinction) with additional CPD training in deep tissue techniques. She is based at our Bow clinic and is completing her Level 3 Sports Massage qualification. DBS checked. Lyric works closely with LPAW’s physiotherapy team, when a patient’s treatment plan includes massage, there is direct communication between the therapist and the treating physiotherapist about goals, areas of focus, and contraindications.

Many of our expert physiotherapists are also trained in massage therapy.

LPAW is a multi-disciplinary clinic. Massage doesn’t exist in isolation here — it is part of a clinical pathway.

A common scenario: a patient presents with chronic lower back pain. Their physiotherapist assesses them, identifies significant lumbar and gluteal muscle tension alongside a motor control deficit, and designs a treatment plan. Massage is scheduled to reduce the muscle tension and improve tissue mobility — creating the conditions in which the physiotherapy exercises work more effectively. The massage therapist is briefed on the treatment goals. After 2–3 massage sessions, the patient progresses to a strengthening programme, with massage continuing periodically to manage recurring tension.

This kind of integration — where massage amplifies the effect of physiotherapy rather than running in parallel without connection — is more effective than either treatment in isolation.

If you are currently a physiotherapy patient at LPAW and want to incorporate massage into your care, speak to your treating physiotherapist about a referral.

Duration: 30, 60, or 90 minutes, depending on the session type and areas to be addressed.
Before your session: You’ll be asked brief questions about your reason for attending, any injuries or medical conditions, and areas you’d like addressed. Massage is contraindicated in certain situations (see below), please let us know of any relevant health conditions at the time of booking.
During the session: You will be appropriately draped throughout, only the area being treated is exposed. The room is quiet and private. Your therapist will work with your feedback throughout to adjust pressure.
After your session: Some post-massage soreness is normal, particularly after deep tissue work, and typically resolves within 24–48 hours. Drink water. Light movement helps the tissue respond well.

Meet our team of experts

LPAW’s clinical team includes 19 practitioners, many holding postgraduate qualifications from UCL, King’s College London, and Guy’s and St Thomas’. Lead clinician Mr Arjun Viswanath MSc, MCSP, MPPA – Co-Founder and Consultant Physiotherapist – brings 25+ years of NHS and private experience including BMI London Independent Hospital and Harley Street.

Every clinician joining LPAW completes a mandatory intensive shadowing placement with our Consultant Physiotherapist before seeing patients independently. This is not a standard practice at most clinics – it’s our way of maintaining clinical consistency across the team.

What Our Patients Say

From the moment I walked into this clinic, I knew everything was going to be okay. After seeing many physios, Priyanka, the pelvic specialist, was the first one to properly diagnose my back injury and choose exercises that were actually right for my condition.

I HIGHLY recommend hydrotherapy. This clinic has truly been life-changing for me. When you live with constant pain, finding real relief is priceless.

Thank you for the care, professionalism, and for giving me hope again ❤️

We had 6 of their amazing physiotherapist support London’s Air Ambulance Charity’s post-race reception for the 2026 London Marathon. Their communication before and during the event was excellent and all our runners have commented on how much their post-race massage has helped them with their recovery. We hope to work with them again in the future

I suffer with lower back disc bulges pinching my muscles and severely limiting my mobility, stability, and indeed causing agonising pain at the worst of times. I received a kind, patient and conscientious home visit at first before being invited to hydrotherapy at the clinic. 2 sessions in and I'm loving it so much, I'm determined to get one of these pools for myself later on in life. Couldn't recommend them highly enough.

I had to visit the clinic for a hip injury I received from running. I started physio with Anup back in November and started with hydrotherapy, moving into physio in the new year. I've had a great experience with Anup and now I'm well on the road to recovery, I've started running again and I know what strength workouts I should be doing to keep up my recovery. So glad I found Anup and the clinic and would recommend them to anyone who has an injury!

I was assisted by Priyanka while recovering from a torn quad, and I couldn’t have asked for a better physiotherapist. She was incredibly supportive during a moment of real vulnerability, and I always felt truly taken care of. Her focus during every session was exceptional she even kept counting my reps to make sure I stayed on track!

Priyanka is a wonderful asset to the team, and I feel very lucky to have had her during my recovery. Highly recommended.

Best Physio ever. I visited the clinic after I damaged the ACL ligament practicing judo. I was unable to walk, using crutches and couldn't bend the leg. I was initially told by the doctor to wait at least 6/7 months to be fully recovered and the physiotherapy was the only way to get better. Thanks to the skilled clinic and very professional physiotherapist, they managed to get me back on trainings after 3/4 months only having now a stronger knee than before. I was assisted my Mohammed N R and his job was beyond the expectations. They have specific equipment to practice a high variety of exercises and furthermore they are super friendly and easy reachable by email or phone for last minute doubts. I cannot thank more for the assistance received for a faster recovery they granted me. I fully recommend them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Physiotherapy is a regulated healthcare profession that diagnoses and treats a wide range of musculoskeletal, neurological, and cardiorespiratory conditions. It includes exercise prescription, rehabilitation programmes, and clinical assessment. Sports massage is a manual therapy technique focused specifically on soft tissue. At LPAW, massage is one tool within a physiotherapy framework — we do not substitute massage for clinical assessment when assessment is what’s needed.
This depends entirely on your goals. For general tension management and recovery, many athletes book monthly. For specific treatment of a chronic tension pattern, 3–4 sessions in close succession often produces more lasting change than infrequent single sessions. Your therapist will advise based on what they find.
No. The phrase “no pain, no gain” is a misapplication to massage therapy. Some discomfort from sustained pressure on a tense area is normal and often feels like “productive pain” — most patients describe it as relieving, not distressing. Your therapist will always work within your tolerance and adjust if you are finding the pressure too intense.
Pre-event massage is best timed 24–48 hours before your event, not the day before. Very close to race day, avoid deep tissue work — use only light, stimulating techniques. If in doubt, contact us and we’ll advise for your specific situation.
No. You can book a massage as a standalone service. However, if you present with a specific injury or pain, your therapist may recommend a physiotherapy assessment as the more appropriate first step.
