What is Physiotherapy

When pain limits what you can do – whether that’s lifting your child, running a 5K, or simply sitting comfortably at your desk – physiotherapy is often the most direct route back.

Physiotherapy is a regulated, evidence-based healthcare profession that assesses and treats physical dysfunction through movement, manual therapy, exercise prescription, and patient education.

In the UK, all physiotherapists must be registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). All LPAW Physiotherapists are also Members of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy.

Treatment is tailored to you. There is no standard protocol applied regardless of the individual – your age, activity level, goals, and pain presentation all shape what happens in the room.

A typical physiotherapy episode involves:

  1. Initial Assessment (45–60 minutes) – thorough history, functional and movement analysis, hands-on examination. You will leave the first appointment knowing your diagnosis and the plan.
  2. Active treatment sessions (30–45 minutes) – combination of manual therapy, targeted exercise, education, and modalities such as shockwave therapy, dry needling, or taping as appropriate.
  3. Progressing through your programme – as your condition improves, exercises become more demanding and treatment shifts from passive to active. Our goal is to make you self-sufficient – not dependent on weekly appointments indefinitely.

For complex or chronic cases, physiotherapy is often combined with hydrotherapy or Med-X spinal rehabilitation as part of a structured multi-modal plan.

Your first session runs 45–60 minutes. Arrive in comfortable clothing that allows access to the area being treated (shorts for lower limb, vest for shoulder, etc).

Your physiotherapist will:

  • Take a detailed history of your symptoms, how they began, and what makes them better or worse
  • Ask about your general health, medication, and any relevant investigations (bring any scans or letters)
  • Carry out a thorough physical assessment including movement, strength, and neural testing
  • Give you a clear explanation of what they have found and what it means
  • Agree a treatment plan with you – including realistic timelines and expected number of sessions

You will not be told come back every week indefinitely. You will be given a specific plan.

At LPAW, some frequent types of physiotherapy our clinicians perform are:

  • Musculoskeletal (MSK) physiotherapy – injuries and conditions affecting muscles, joints, tendons, ligaments, and nerves
  • Orthopaedic physiotherapy – structured rehabilitation following joint surgery, fractures, or orthopaedic procedures
  • Post-surgical rehabilitation – structured recovery programmes after hip replacements, knee replacements, ACL reconstructions, rotator cuff repairs, and spinal surgery
  • Chronic pain management – evidence-based programmes for persistent pain that has lasted longer than three months
  • Sports injury rehabilitation – return-to-sport pathways for athletes and recreational exercisers at all levels
  • Paediatric Physiotherapy – physiotherapy for babies, toddlers & children

Meet our team of experts

LPAW’s clinical team includes 19 practitioners, many holding postgraduate qualifications from UCL, King’s College London, and Guy’s and St Thomas’. Lead clinician Mr Arjun Viswanath MSc, MCSP, MPPA – Co-Founder and Consultant Physiotherapist – brings 25+ years of NHS and private experience including BMI London Independent Hospital and Harley Street.

Every clinician joining LPAW completes a mandatory intensive shadowing placement with our Consultant Physiotherapist before seeing patients independently. This is not a standard practice at most clinics – it’s our way of maintaining clinical consistency across the team.

What Our Patients Say

From the moment I walked into this clinic, I knew everything was going to be okay. After seeing many physios, Priyanka, the pelvic specialist, was the first one to properly diagnose my back injury and choose exercises that were actually right for my condition.

I HIGHLY recommend hydrotherapy. This clinic has truly been life-changing for me. When you live with constant pain, finding real relief is priceless.

Thank you for the care, professionalism, and for giving me hope again ❤️

We had 6 of their amazing physiotherapist support London’s Air Ambulance Charity’s post-race reception for the 2026 London Marathon. Their communication before and during the event was excellent and all our runners have commented on how much their post-race massage has helped them with their recovery. We hope to work with them again in the future

I suffer with lower back disc bulges pinching my muscles and severely limiting my mobility, stability, and indeed causing agonising pain at the worst of times. I received a kind, patient and conscientious home visit at first before being invited to hydrotherapy at the clinic. 2 sessions in and I'm loving it so much, I'm determined to get one of these pools for myself later on in life. Couldn't recommend them highly enough.

I had to visit the clinic for a hip injury I received from running. I started physio with Anup back in November and started with hydrotherapy, moving into physio in the new year. I've had a great experience with Anup and now I'm well on the road to recovery, I've started running again and I know what strength workouts I should be doing to keep up my recovery. So glad I found Anup and the clinic and would recommend them to anyone who has an injury!

I was assisted by Priyanka while recovering from a torn quad, and I couldn’t have asked for a better physiotherapist. She was incredibly supportive during a moment of real vulnerability, and I always felt truly taken care of. Her focus during every session was exceptional she even kept counting my reps to make sure I stayed on track!

Priyanka is a wonderful asset to the team, and I feel very lucky to have had her during my recovery. Highly recommended.

Best Physio ever. I visited the clinic after I damaged the ACL ligament practicing judo. I was unable to walk, using crutches and couldn't bend the leg. I was initially told by the doctor to wait at least 6/7 months to be fully recovered and the physiotherapy was the only way to get better. Thanks to the skilled clinic and very professional physiotherapist, they managed to get me back on trainings after 3/4 months only having now a stronger knee than before. I was assisted my Mohammed N R and his job was beyond the expectations. They have specific equipment to practice a high variety of exercises and furthermore they are super friendly and easy reachable by email or phone for last minute doubts. I cannot thank more for the assistance received for a faster recovery they granted me. I fully recommend them.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. You can self-refer directly – call 020 8983 3218 or book online. Many patients come directly without seeing their GP first. If you’re using private health insurance, check with your insurer whether a GP referral is required under your policy. For medico-legal cases, referrals come via case managers.

This depends entirely on your condition. Acute soft tissue injuries typically resolve in 4–8 sessions. Chronic conditions, post-surgical rehabilitation, and complex spinal problems usually require a longer course. Your physiotherapist will give you a clear estimate at the end of your first session.

Hands-on treatment such as joint mobilisation or soft tissue work can cause temporary discomfort. Your physiotherapist will always work within your tolerance and explain what they are doing. Temporary post-treatment soreness (like after exercise) is normal and usually resolves within 24–48 hours. Trigger point dry needling can also cause moderate discomfort for 24-48 hours.

Yes. Post-surgical rehabilitation is a core part of what we do. We accept referrals directly from hospital discharge teams and work within your surgeon’s protocol. Hip replacement, knee replacement, ACL reconstruction, and rotator cuff repair are among the most common post-surgical presentations we see.

Our practitioners can refer directly for imaging without requiring a GP appointment. For private patients, we can arrange this rapidly through our network of radiology providers. For NHS patients, we can facilitate onward referral to the appropriate pathway.

Most major UK private health insurers cover physiotherapy, including AXA Health, Bupa, Cigna, WPA, and Vitality. You will typically need a pre-authorisation number from your insurer before your first session. Contact us and we’ll walk you through the process – see our insurance page for details.

Yes. Katy Edebol is our paediatric specialist. For more information, see our dedicated Babies & Children page.

Both are regulated allied health professionals who work with musculoskeletal conditions. Physiotherapy tends to place greater emphasis on exercise rehabilitation and active movement; osteopathy uses a broader range of manual techniques with a holistic whole-body philosophy. LPAW offers both — see our Osteopathy page. Many patients benefit from seeing both practitioners in a coordinated plan.

Access to London's Top Consultant Doctors

If your assessment suggests you need further investigation – an MRI, X-ray, nerve conduction study, or a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon’s opinion – LPAW has established referral relationships with some of London’s leading specialists.

As experts in their field, our clinicians can write a direct referral without the delay of a GP appointment. We work with both NHS and private pathways depending on your preference and urgency.

Recovery after orthopaedic surgery – particularly hip and knee replacements – benefits enormously from structured physiotherapy from day one. We work closely with surgical teams, accepting referrals from hospital discharge and designing phased rehabilitation programmes that match your surgical protocol.

For joint replacement patients, LPAW’s hydrotherapy pool – heated to 36°C, the warmest clinical pool in London – offers early mobilisation in a low-load aquatic environment before land-based exercises can be fully tolerated. This combination typically accelerates strength recovery and reduces post-operative pain in the critical early weeks.
