Massage can be extremely important when applied during the repair and remodelling phases, which are the last 2 stages of healing. In the repair phase there is poor blood supply post injury and therefore very low oxygen levels. In this phase the injured area also contains loose mesh of fibres. By massaging while the injured area is in repair stage may encourage fluid exchange to remove any inflammatory waste.

In the remodelling phase the collagen fibres will mature and shorten and the scar tissue will contract over time. Therefore massage is thought to help the orientation of the collagen fibres to result in a healthier scar. Furthermore, massage techniques on chronic scar tissues may help remove any adhesions and aid in realignment of the collagen fibres.
